Tana, blood of the earth earrings and pendant in silver and magnesite

The “Tana” earrings are crafted around teardrop-shaped blue magnesite beads. Each stone is delicately suspended from a handcrafted sterling silver wire setting, coiled around the tip like an aquatic tendril guarding a precious spring.

The name Tana is inspired by Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia and one of the sources of the Blue Nile. For us, this lake embodies the idea of water as the blood of the Earth—a vital, invisible, and essential fluid. Ethiopia also evokes a powerful memory from our childhood: the great famine of 1984–1985, the first moment of collective awareness we experienced, as schoolchildren contributing to relief efforts. Only much later did we learn that such a vast lake existed in a country we had imagined to be nothing but arid. This revelation deepened our understanding of water as a discreet yet vital treasure, sometimes hidden beneath the surface of a land marked by hardship.

The blue magnesite, chosen for its resemblance to water, carries this symbolism further. Its fragility reminds us that water, though rich, is vulnerable—a resource that must be cherished and protected. By wearing these earrings or this pendant, one carries a symbolic fragment of this memory: a piece of mineral beauty bearing a universal message.
