Aztec sun, cycles and survival necklace in silver and gold

The Aztec Sun necklace is composed of a fine sterling silver chain and a circular pendant crafted from the same metal. The pendant has been meticulously gilded with 24-karat gold using a traditional, artisanal process that involves a manually prepared solution in keeping with age-old craftsmanship.

This piece draws its inspiration from the sacred, complex, and ambivalent relationship the Aztec people had with the sun. For this pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican civilization, the sun was not merely a source of light, but a living entity whose daily journey across the sky had to be sustained and nourished — through blood. According to their cosmogony, four previous suns or worlds had already existed, each destroyed in a cataclysm. Humanity, as we know it, lives under the Fifth Sun — a fragile cosmic cycle that the Aztecs believed must be preserved at all costs, particularly through ritual sacrifices.

The pendant evokes this ancient tale through a series of symbolic circular forms. The largest circle represents the sun’s unending course across the sky. A smaller inner ring stands for the Earth, which depends on the sun’s energy to thrive. Finally, a small sphere symbolizes the moon — inseparable companion to the sun — whose phases also guided the Aztec ritual and agricultural calendars.

This necklace is a tribute to the astronomical ingenuity of pre-Columbian civilizations, to their deeply spiritual worldview, and to their cyclical understanding of time. It is also a poetic reminder of the delicate balance between light and darkness, life and disappearance, a balance that runs through ancient myths and still echoes in the present day.

Metal: sterling silver (925) and 24k gold.

Necklace length: 17.7 in (45 cm).

Gold plating: The pendant has been immersed in three successive baths. The gold layer is of exceptionally high quality.

Finish: Shiny.
