Shiroi ha, white oak leaf pendant in silver and dendritic agate

The Shiroi ha pendant is built around a superb elongated oval dendritic agate from the island of Java, Indonesia. This fascinating stone, formed within volcanic rock cavities, features natural inclusions of manganese or iron that create dark, tree-like patterns resembling branches or delicate ferns.

Inspired by plant life—especially the foliage of trees—this piece pays tribute to the majesty of the oak. Its long, curved shape evokes the lobed leaves typical of the oak tree, stylized here in a fluid and organic line. The choice of silver as the primary material reinforces the connection to the white oak, a noble and luminous species.

The decision to set this agate on a stylized white oak leaf is rooted in two main reasons. First, the milky-white matrix of the stone harmonizes beautifully with the idea of the white oak’s pale, refined essence. Second, the dendritic inclusion—denser and more centralized than in other agates—evokes both the life force of the oak and a hidden mystery at its core. This vertical inclusion, slicing through the stone like a lifeline, resembles an eye—perhaps animal, perhaps mythological.

That eye could belong to a dryad, the tree nymph of Greek mythology, or to a kodama, the forest spirit revered in Japanese folklore. These entities were believed to dwell within ancient trees—especially oaks—guarding memory and wisdom. In this pendant, the agate seems to watch in silence, like the ancient gaze of a slumbering woodland spirit held within a leaf.

The oak’s symbolism is vast and universal. Sacred in Greek, Roman, Celtic, Germanic, and Slavic cultures, it is often associated with strength, stability, majesty, and the heavens—partly because of its affinity with lightning, as if it were speaking directly to the gods. Among the Celts, the oak was the druids’ tree, a mediator between worlds. In Japan too, it carries symbolic weight: its leaves, which do not fall until the new ones appear, are a sign of prosperity and the continuity of generations.

Finally, this pendant reflects a subtle Japanese aesthetic: the asymmetry of the shape, the imperfect inclusion, and the organic lines all echo the principle of wabi-sabi—the quiet beauty of natural imperfection. Shiroi ha means “white foliage” in Japanese. This name evokes both vegetal lightness and a pure, silent elegance—a fusion of ancient forest power with the refined poetry of contemporary jewelry.
