JOYERIA
INSPIRACIÓN
This sterling silver pendant is inspired by an engraving of the Feathered Serpent, one of the major deities of pre-Hispanic Mexico, venerated across several Mesoamerican civilizations. Known as Kukulkan among the Maya and Quetzalcóatl among the Aztecs, he was a creator god, bearer of wisdom, and master of the elements.
The design of this pendant is based on a sculpted image found on the lid of a ritual stone box called a tepetlacalli. This piece dates from the Late Postclassic period, between 1502 and 1520 AD, during the reign of Moctezuma II. It now belongs to the Albert Hackmack collection, housed at the Museum of Ethnology in Hamburg, Germany.
Tepetlacalli were votive stone chests used to store sacred objects, ritual tools, offerings, or sometimes the ashes of deceased rulers. This particular example may have been commissioned by Moctezuma II himself and might have held the funerary remains of Nezahualcóyotl, the renowned poet-king of Texcoco and ally of Tenochtitlán.
The pendant represents Quetzalcóatl—literally "quetzal serpent" or "feathered serpent"—a hybrid creature that connects heaven and earth. He symbolizes fertility, the vital breath, knowledge, and renewal. Associated with resurrection and reincarnation, he is also the god of the four elements—air, fire, earth, and water—making him a central figure in the balance of the cosmos. A protector of priests and artisans, Quetzalcóatl is also linked to the planet Venus, the winds, and the morning light.
This pendant pays tribute to the profound symbolic complexity of Quetzalcóatl, a deity both celestial and earthly, messenger of civilization and guardian of ancient mysteries.
Metal: plata de ley (925).
