Compass rose, Viking compass pendant in silver and labradorite

The "Compass Rose" pendant is designed around a large oval labradorite, whose luminous qualities inspired us to reflect on the Vikings and their extraordinary navigation skills, achieved with the means of their time. Aboard their famous longships, they explored vast territories, even reaching the shores of North America long before Christopher Columbus.

To explain such a high level of navigation, some authors mention the use of a "sunstone," referred to in Icelandic sagas, which would have served as a natural compass. This stone, capable of detecting the sun’s position even through overcast skies, may have allowed Viking sailors to maintain their course despite poor weather conditions.

Among the proposed candidates, labradorite, with its ability to polarize light, is sometimes cited. When correctly oriented, it concentrates sunlight and seems to glow, potentially revealing the sun's location behind the clouds.

Myth or reality, it was fascinating to work with this magnificent labradorite with its green and golden flashes, in connection with this ancient idea.
The oval stone was set horizontally to evoke the infinite horizon of the ocean, on a custom-shaped silver plate. At the four cardinal points, small discs topped with a half-sphere represent a stylized compass rose. The labradorite is held in place by delicate triangular prongs at the sides and bottom, resembling arrows pointing toward the directions of travel.

To suspend the pendant, a twisted ring was added at the top, inspired by the marine ropes used by Viking sailors. The back of the pendant is pierced with circular openings, allowing light to pass through the stone and reveal its subtle reflections.
