At the heart of this jewelry lies the motif of Metztli, the Aztec goddess of the moon, night, and farmers in Aztec cosmology. A metamorphosis of Coyolxauhqui or Tecciztecatl, she was revered for her ability to control the waters of the earth through the serpent she bore within her, thus holding the power to unleash storms and floods. But beyond her divine attributes, Metztli also embodies maternal love, offering nurturing protection to those who worshipped her.

In this representation, a gracefully curved crescent moon embraces the graceful silhouette of a rabbit, an image that has transcended ages and cultures across the world. The legends surrounding the presence of the rabbit on the moon are manifold and mysterious in Pre-Columbian cultures, but one version tells that the gods, displeased with the equal brightness of the sun and the moon, projected a rabbit onto its face to obscure it, thus forming the silhouette we know today.
