Kû, Japanese Buddhist symbol ring in silver

The "" ring is a custom design created for one of our clients who wanted to combine the symbol of the sea with a Japanese ideogram. Inspired by our "La Mer" ring, which features stylized waves in a Japanese aesthetic, this creation incorporates the kû (空) symbol to represent infinity, calm, and tempest, embodying a harmony between the opposing forces of nature.

The Sea ring

The (空), or śūnyatā in Sanskrit, represents the concept of "emptiness" or "void," sometimes translated as "latency" or "non-substantiality." Originating from Buddhist thought, this concept was developed in India between 150 and 250 CE by the scholar Nagarjuna, who framed it as a pathway to profound understanding of reality.

Kû is a fundamental concept in Mahāyāna Buddhist philosophy. It refers to the idea that all things lack independent and intrinsic existence. Nothing has a fixed essence; everything depends on external conditions and the relationships between phenomena. This understanding highlights impermanence and interdependence. Kû is a key to grasping the nature of suffering (dukkha) and samsara (the cycle of rebirths), guiding one toward spiritual liberation by dissolving illusions of permanence and individuality.

In Japanese aesthetics, kû is not merely an absence but a space rich with meaning and creative potential. It can be seen as the empty space within an artwork that allows it to breathe. For instance, in ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arrangement) or kintsugi (the repair of ceramics with gold), the void becomes an active element that enhances the whole. Kû enables the piece to take shape and convey a message that transcends the visible.

In Zen practice, emptiness is also reflected in the design of spaces, such as gardens or temples. The empty spaces are as significant as the physical elements, inviting contemplation and inner tranquility. These spaces allow the mind to detach from daily distractions and focus on what truly matters.

In music and poetry, kû refers to silences and pauses, particularly in haikus, where the emptiness between words creates space for interpretation and reflection. It is not an absence but an integral part of the composition, inviting silent contemplation.

On a broader level, kû embodies the pursuit of harmony in all aspects of life—human relationships, nature, and daily activities. The concept urges us to look beyond tangible objects and appreciate the potential and fluidity of human interactions and lived experiences.

In essence, kû is far more than a notion of emptiness; it represents a profound vision of interdependence and vacuity, offering guidance toward a life in harmony and serenity. Through this ring, kû becomes a living symbol, a constant reminder that space and silence, far from being empty, are filled with infinite possibilities, transformation, and creation.
