Neolithic owl, copper age bird necklace in silver

The "Neolithic Owl" necklace offers a glimpse into ancient history and human creativity from ancient times. This pendant is a faithful replica of an archaeological piece found in Cerro de la Cabeza, Valencina de la Concepción, in the region of Seville, Spain. Preciously preserved at the Archaeological Museum of Seville, this original piece is a moving testimony to the craftsmanship and culture of the Copper Age.

Dating back over 4000 years, this necklace embodies one of over 4000 representations of objects crafted during the Copper Age, between 4500 and 2500 BC. Owls engraved on these plaques were frequently found in tombs and burial pits throughout southwestern Spain and Portugal. Long interpreted as ritual objects or divine representations, these figurines have also been associated with symbols of fertility and nocturnal goddesses in the Neolithic period.

However, a recent theory suggests a more humble origin for these objects, suggesting that they could be the work of children. This idea is based on the simplicity of their design compared to other more elaborate objects of the time, as well as striking similarities between these Neolithic owls and bird drawings made by children (aged 4 to 13) today. Archaeologists have conducted experiments to determine that it took only 2 to 3 hours to make these pieces, a much shorter time than that required for more complex works.

According to this hypothesis, these plaques could be traces of learning, gifts from children to their elders during burials. However, it is important to consider this theory as an intellectual provocation rather than a definitive conclusion. These objects could have multiple and varied meanings, going beyond their simple ritual function. Perhaps they were simply decorative objects, witnesses to the creativity and imagination of our ancestors in their daily lives.

We have created a custom order for this pendant, which you can find under the name "Small neolithic owl."
