Sacred fire, Mexican Aztec glyph pendant in silver

The “Sacred Fire” pendant features a pre-Hispanic Aztec glyph, engraved on a rectangular silver plate. It refers to a major ceremonial event of the Mexica civilization from central Mexico: the Xiuhmolpilli, or “binding of the years,” a ritual of renewal marking the end of a 52-year cycle—the moment when the 260-day ritual calendar Tonalpohualli and the 365-day solar calendar Xiuhpohualli aligned.

This pivotal and sacred moment carried deep symbolic weight. The Aztecs believed that the world could end at the close of such a cycle. To ward off this possibility, five days of stillness and austerity preceded the ritual: no fires, no work, fasting, and the destruction of old objects marked the end of an era. On the night of the fifth day, once the constellation Orion appeared in the sky—an auspicious sign—the fire was rekindled using a sacred bundle known as the Xiuhmolpilli. This New Fire was ignited on the chest of a sacrificial victim atop Mount Huixachtecatl. From this sacred flame, torches were lit and carried across the region to reignite every hearth.

The glyph depicted on the pendant shows a ceremonial brazier or incense burner, with stylized flames and rising smoke—an image of offerings burned in honor of the gods. This symbol embodies purification, the closing of a cycle, and the ignition of a new life path.
