Eclipse, Aztec sun and starry night necklace in sterling silver

The Eclipse necklace features an archaeological reproduction of an iconic symbol from the Aztec civilization of Mexico. The upper part of this silver necklace evokes the sun, with a circle adorned with radiant motifs symbolizing the strength and warmth of the solar orb. In contrast to this brightness, the lower part of the necklace represents the night, with a series of small circles depicting twinkling stars. Every detail is meticulously crafted, down to the tiny eyes adorning the lower edge of the pendant, symbolic representations of the stars watching over the nocturnal sky.

This captivating motif is interpreted as depicting an eclipse or evoking the transition between day and night, whether at dawn or dusk. For the Pre-Hispanic peoples of Mexico, this representation held paramount importance, as it reflected their deep concern regarding the possibility of the sun’s disappearance, if only for the duration of the night, but especially during eclipses – moments when they departed from their routine to engage in exceptional events.

This motif is derived from the Codex Borbonicus, a precious Aztec document used for divinatory rituals and the organization of religious festivals. Dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, during the era of Spanish conquest, this codex serves as a fascinating source of information on Aztec cosmology and beliefs.
