Spartan shield, greek sparta hoplites cufflinks in sterling silver

These cufflinks are crafted from 925 sterling silver, meticulously alloyed by hand in our workshop. Their design draws inspiration from a possible shape that the shields of the hoplites (heavy infantry) of the Greek city of Sparta may have adopted during antiquity.

Spartan shields, measuring approximately 1 meter in diameter and weighing nearly 6 kilograms, were renowned for their robustness and symbolism. According to some texts, they may have been adorned with an inverted V-shaped symbol (Λ), an archaic representation of the Greek letter Lambda. This symbol would have been an abbreviation for "Lakedaimon," referring to Lacedaemon, the name of the city of Sparta in classical times.

Spartans are believed to have started using this symbol since the Second Messenian War (640-620 BC) to identify themselves more easily on the battlefield. While there is no archaeological evidence of this specific decoration on Spartan hoplite shields, ancient accounts tell that the mere sight of this Lambda symbol instilled fear in the enemies of Sparta. This image evokes the reputation of courage, strength, tenacity, and cohesion that characterized the Spartans, whose power relied on the unity of the phalanx, where each soldier protected one another and advanced as one on the battlefield.

These cufflinks were custom-made at the request of a client who provided an image from the movie "The 300" as inspiration. Shields play a significant role in the film, and we worked based on these guidelines, even depicting some traces of lance or sword blows on their surface, to pay tribute to the heroism and bravery of the Spartans as depicted in this iconic film.
