The Bekuh earrings are part of the Jicara on Silver collection. They represent a personal interpretation of the art of engraving on jícara or gourd. This fruit of the calabash tree (Crescentia alata), known as jícaro in Spanish, is a cucurbit native to Mexico and Central America. Round in shape, it is traditionally left to dry and harden before being transformed into functional or decorative objects.

In many regions of Central America, the jícara is used as a bowl, ladle, or vessel for drinking tejate, a Pre-Hispanic beverage made from corn and cacao. Beyond its practical use, it also serves as a medium for finely carved or painted craftsmanship, often adorned with motifs inspired by local flora and fauna. This craft is particularly present in Oaxaca de Juárez, where we reside. In traditional markets, local artisans showcase their expertise by presenting jícaras decorated with narrative scenes or geometric patterns, thus preserving a millennia-old heritage.

We have adapted these traditional motifs onto silver earrings as a tribute to this ancient art. For these earrings, we have depicted a dog with a bushy tail, moving amidst plant-inspired designs and framed by a geometric frieze.

In Zapotec Pre-Hispanic culture, the dominant ethnic group in the central valleys of Oaxaca, the dog symbolizes loyalty and humility. This animal also holds a fundamental role in Mesoamerican mythology. According to ancient beliefs, the dog—particularly the xoloitzcuintli (Mexican hairless dog)—was the companion of souls on their journey to the afterlife. It guided the deceased through the nine levels of Mictlán, the underworld, leading them to their final destination. This belief was so deeply rooted that ceramic dog figurines have been discovered in numerous Pre-Hispanic tombs, notably at Monte Albán, one of the great centers of Zapotec civilization.

We named these earrings Bekuh, meaning "dog" in the Zapotec language, as a tribute to this emblematic animal and the rich cultural heritage of this civilization.
